Brenda Cappy Gruhn, NCC, LPC
One of my favorite quotes is by Mr. Fred Rogers who repeated what his mother told him when he was a little boy, “When bad things happen, look to the helpers.” We all have “bad” things happen in our lives. For children and teens, it’s often very difficult to process life’s problems and traumas and sometimes they need “a helper” in order to gain the skills they need to do so. I am one of those helpers! I have dedicated myself to working with children, adolescents, and teens to help them become their best selves and learn the skills needed to live mentally healthy lives.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a certified school counselor with nearly 25 years of experience working with children and families in both public schools and outpatient settings. I am also nationally certified through the National Board for Certified Counselors. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Point Park University and I have a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Pittsburgh. I am currently a PhD student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania majoring in Counselor Education and Supervision.
My approach to working with others is focused on empathy, compassion, and understanding. I utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques and incorporate art, music, books, and games in sessions to engage children in the therapeutic process. My areas of expertise include helping children and their families who struggle with anxiety, grief and loss, divorce/changing families, stress management, general coping skills, self-esteem, depression, self-regulation of feelings and behaviors, and relational problems with family and peers.
I am committed to helping individuals become mentally well and learn the skills they need to be the best they can be currently and as they grow. I would welcome the opportunity to help you, your child or your loved ones be the best person they can be!
