Off the Script: Episode 3
By Don Laird, MS, NCC, LPC
The hero’s journey described in Joseph Campbell’s book “Man with a Thousand Faces” is a sequence of fluid, yet well-defined steps all us may experience on our life’s journey. Campbell was a mythologist, writer and academic, and best known for his work in comparative religion and mythology.
At its core, Campbell believed humankind’s intrinsic story was universal in its narrative and scope; a story imprinted in the unconscious psyche of all humankind. If we are unaware of our story, the hero in us remains dormant and we live lives that do not do justice to our abilities and talents. We go through the motions of day-to-day living and never fully realize who we are.
It is in this spirit that we present to you our latest podcast simply titled, “The Hero’s Journey,” where my co-host, Christina Pettinato, and I take a brief look at three movies we feel best encapsulate the hero’s journey in pop cinema. In these intrinsic films, we join with the main characters on their life’s journey. We recognize, whether consciously or not, their struggles are perhaps our own. Each of us is responsible for our own Hero’s Journey. Have a listen, and perhaps your journey may begin today: Click here to listen.
