Build Strength: Introducing Sharissa Shatten

As with all of our new therapists, we like to provide you with some insight on getting to know who you may choose to get to know you better. We asked Sharissa Shatten, MS, LPC, NCC some questions that you may be interested in reading.

What makes you smile? Why?

What makes me smile is quite a lot of things, actually! A good song on the radio makes me smile. A smell that flashes a positive memory from my childhood. Kids practicing yoga. My furkids and family. Among many other things! All of these (and more) make me smile because I appreciate the life that I have despite the struggles. I appreciate my past and the memories that I hold. I love working with children and watching them grow. All of these things have helped mold me into who I am today.

What was the last book you read that had an impact? What were your thoughts on it?

40 Days to Personal Revolution by Barron Bapiste is what I’m currently reading. Seeing I’m not alone with every day struggles is refreshing. Having suggestions from a mindful point of view is very beneficial. Practicing my meditation and yoga practice in these 40 days is strengthening my mind, emotional state, and my physical body.

When did you first know you wanted to work in the helping field?

I knew I wanted to work in the helping field during my undergrad internship. At that time, I still had no idea what I truly wanted to do with my life. After interning, I was hired full time. Those children changed my life forever, as I hope I helped brighten their lives. I worked with preschoolers who were sexually abused, physically abused, and/or emotionally abused. I saw these kids in their best and worst moments, and helped them grow into more confident little beings. I knew then that I wanted to do more for them, so I went back to school for my LPC.

If you could be an insect, which would you be?

I would be a lady bug! They’re lucky and less likely to be squished or considered scary!

Coffee or tea?

My morning routine include a cup of coffee during my work days. I find myself trying to stick to that routine on the weekend. If I feel like I need just SOMETHING extra, I love to drink warm tea with honey, or, especially if I’m feeling stressed!

What was your latest binge-watch show?

I watched all of Tiger King. I’m not sure how I feel about admitting to that!

How do you build trust in clients?

I really like to connect with the people I meet, and have an empath personality. Naturally getting to know them, seeing our common interests, and even our differences helps me grow a relationship with that person. I LOVE to learn new things – and truly appreciate the differences my clients can bring to me and teach me! I think with the natural progression of our relationship builds that trust.
